Rain Gardens as Flooding Prevention in East Palo Alto

Authors: Kae Jensen, Theo Gress, Cade Cannedy, Chase Donnell, Elizabeth Diaz-Jacobo, Alister Sharp, Gabriel Carrada, Anthony Otonari, Vera Cordova Mandoza, Chris Corvetti, Junko Bryant, & Brian Tatsuta

Our rain garden project helped 25 households manage impacts from flooding. What’s next?

A single rain garden can make all the difference for one home, but flooding affects all residents along the bay and in FEMA-designated flood zones. Prevention for flooding requires community-led, scalable solutions; rain gardens are attainable, sustainable, and effective options to make communities more resilient to flooding.

CRC, Fresh Approach and Grassroots Ecology provide recommendations for scaling up and key takeaways for other community-based organizations to start their own rain garden projects.
